CBS TV: The network’s programming department relied on the company’s research team to determine which pilots were suitable for pick-up each season. To determine this, program analysts evaluated focus-group comments and test-audience responses to screenings, assessing the relative appeal of such program elements as character, story, humor and suspense. Among more than 300 dramas, comedies and game shows tested were Newhart, E/R, Beauty and the Beast, Murder She Wrote and Murphy Brown.

HBO: In seeking projects for development, HBO optioned the 1982 pop-culture book The Catalog of Cool as the basis for a proposed television special. The book was also used as a reference work by show producers in preparation of the NBC series Crime Story.

CBS Productions: Phillip DeGuere, producer of the series Whiz Kids, bought a series of story ideas for the program.
